The week of 4

4!

4!

Tonight we tucked into bed one bouncy, smiling, laughing three year old.  Tomorrow she will be four!!!

Finally and so quickly all at once.

In true Mette fashion this whole week has been about her already.  We had a small birthday tea party with four girls from her class on Tuesday and today she took cupcakes into school and celebrated there.  Tomorrow, her actual birthday, we are having a family party and I will be cooking all day for her “special requests!”  At first I thought she was just asking for the normal, it’s your birthday I will make you whatever you want for dinner, routine, but now she is talking about what she wants for her special breakfast, not just cereal or oatmeal, something fancy with sprinkles (!) and I am sure she has plans for lunch.  It has been fun planning all of this with her and seeing how excited she is about everything.  She had a wonderful time at her party and though I was exhausted when it was over, everyone had a great time.

Unfortunately Otto has come down with a bug that is going around school and has had a fever on and off the past few days.  Fevers mean no school (for good reason) so he has been home and will be for at least tomorrow.  He really doesn’t feel well and pretty much just hangs out playing video games, watching movies, reading books with us or when he feels better, playing with playdough with Mette.  Other than having to quarantine him in our room during the party he has been fine being home and it’s been nice having him around.  I am really hoping that tomorrow will be a fever free day though and he can get back to his normal routine soon.  He asks about school a lot and I think he is anxious to get back soon.  Still it is nice to snuggle and read 5 chapters from our OZ book back to back with the kids in the afternoon.

Tomorrow I will be baking a cake and getting ready for her big dinner.  She is so excited to wake up FOUR!  I have lots more photos to post but will wait until I have the ones from tomorrow but I will share these now….

Hello Again!

Mette getting in the holiday spirit.

Mette getting in the holiday spirit.

I realize that it has been forever since I have blogged anything at all.  I suppose I could try and catch up, but I think my odds are better if I just start with where we are now.  I can say that school for both the kids is going great.  We love Otto’s Kindergarden teacher and he does as well.  He is really starting to read and is excited to head out the door each day.  He wishes (actually we all do) that there was more time before and after school to play on his own, but we have been trying to keep the weekends low key to allow him plenty of time to fart around.  Kids need that, and Otto is no exception.

Mette loves Kinderfolk and seems to be making some nice friends in her class.  She comes home with all kinds of cool projects and after a small revolt in the cleaning up department seems to be fitting in quite well.

How they are going to be four and six in a few weeks is beyond me.  But let’s not dwell on that, we can still talk about the holidays.

These two are so helpful when you are trying to pack!

We took Otto and Mette out of school the last week before break and headed to Florida.  We spent a few days in Jacksonville visiting family, LouMoma and Grandma Bah and then we traveled with Grandma Bah to Disney for a few days.

Not surprising the kids (and the big kids) had a wonderful time.  Our timing was perfect.  The park wasn’t crowded at all and the weather was perfect.  80 and sunny with a light breeze.  We even went swimming!  On the day we left it was 55 and raining.  I think we timed that just right!

We flew from Orlando to Philly and spent a few days there visiting with Granpa Chris, Nona Jen and Harry.  A nice trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum was in order.  As well as lots of play time for the kids.

We finally made it back home on the 23rd.  For Christmas Eve we hosted more family here for a nice meal and then it was time to get the kids in bed and wrap presents!!  Not too surprising they were a bit excited and had lots of stories to tell each other before bed.  I was surprised though, they were asleep by 8:30 which isn’t too much much later than they are usually up.  Eric and I wrapped, ate the cookies for Santa and tucked into bed as well.  All of use were pretty tired from all the traveling.

Too excited to sleep on Christmas Eve they were telling each other stories.

I am not going to jinx myself with saying I promise to blog more in the new year, because that is just setting myself up for failure.  But I’ll think it.

and try hard too!

All about the girl

I have been writing the blog post in my head for weeks.  It is quite witty and full of charming and clever jokes.

Where they all are now, I am not sure.  It’s too quiet here to think.

Yesterday and Today have been all about Mette.  Finally, in her mind.  For years she has been watching Otto go to preschool, soccer and Kindergarden while she has not been old enough and had to stay home.  Yesterday that all changed.  In the morning we had her first meet the teacher day for Preschool.  Knowing this was her first moment to shine she dressed for the day in a fancy flowered sundress, two necklaces, one of my chunky resin rings, a flowered headband and about 6 coats of lip gloss.  Every time I tuned my back she was layering on more.  We walked there together holding hands, talking about anything and nothing.  There are of course the moments of “she was so tiny”  “she’s my little baby.”  And she was, is.  But, she is also so ready for this.  Ready to have her own class, make her own friends.  In the 25 minutes we were there she had a tea party and tried on four dress-up outfits.  You want to make sure they have all you needs met.

We came home and hosted a Food Co-Op meeting and had lunch with friends.  A normal Tuesday morning.  After an afternoon of lounging and playing Mette finally was able to open the package of ballet tights that came from Amazon weeks ago and have been taunting her with their pinkness ever since.  We pulled her hair back into a neat litte bun and headed off to her first Creative Movement class.  Step 1 on the way to Ballet which she has only been wanting to do since she was 18 months!  Last year all she wanted from Santa was a tutu and ballet slippers.  It has been a long wait for class, but we made it.  Honestly, seeing five little girls lined up in matching shoes and tights with pink leotards is pretty amazingly cute I have to say.  Once a month parents get to come in and watch them practice so I will have more action shots later, but trust me, it’s wonderful.  She loved class and skipped the whole way home.  Which is good, because two years of build up was a lot of pressure.

This morning after dropping Otto off at the bus stop Eric walked back home so we could take Mette to her first day of Kinderfolk together.  We tried to get some photos before we left but she was too excited to stand still or make normal faces.  Eric also shot some video so we maybe can get a screen capture later for a good shot.  She waked to class and went right in when the teachers opened the door.  I said goodbye about 5 times expecting more of a reaction or even acknowledgment from her but really, she just wanted to pick a job and then get on with the crafts.  I don’t know what is worse, Otto’s tears on his first days or Mette not even flinching when I left.  I can’t wait to go pick her up and see how her day was.  I told her we could go out to lunch just us girls to celebrate her first day.

So here I am, sitting in an empty house on a Wednesday morning.  This will be my new norm.  Every Mon, Wed, and Fri mornings Mette will be at preschool and of course Otto is gone all day.  Yes, I have lists and lists of things I have to do, and things I want to do and it will be really nice to get some of those things done (though the first two things involve painting ceilings which I hate so, bleh).  Still it’s funny.

For so long my goals have been things like:

being able to pee with the door closed and no one asking me questions.

having a chance to gather my thoughts and plan without always feeling rushed.

listening to NPR without worrying about having to explain war when they start talking about it.

wanting, just once in a while, to make myself some toast and not have to share it. (done, just finished two pieces!!)

Now, it seems like I have mountains of time to do all of these things.  I know from last year when Otto was at Kinderfolk that the 2.5 hours Mette really is gone go by so quickly and having to drop off and pick up takes longer than you think it will.  But still, it is a whole new era for me.  I have quite a few knitting projects queued up as well as house projects and of course there is always cooking and cleaning but for this week at least I am not going to do any of that.  Well, I am sure I will knit, I can’t imagine not knitting, but I am not cleaning, or washing anything.  I just might rest and have some more coffee.

I am gathering photos of the past few weeks for Friday’s post.  I should say that after a few tearful mornings Otto is over the hump and LOVES school.  He has come home ecstatic every day but was still resistant in the mornings until this week.  Now he is eager to go and has a blast.  He is writing letters and sounds out things ALL THE TIME.  It’s amazing.  And the greatest feeling ever.

he’s off

Wow.

there he went.  Swallowed by the bus.

I still can’t believe we have two hours until he gets home and he has been gone since 8am!!  Kindergarden.  All day. It is more than I can process.

There have been many discussions lately of how big the school is and how he is a little nervous.  At the bus stop when all the parents were asking “are you excited” and all the kids were saying “yes”, Otto was honest and said “I am a little scared.”  Me too kid.  Me too.

A the last minute before he was to get on the bus he looked back with tears and fear.  My heart swelled.  But his friend Elsa who was also a bit nervous took his hand and up the steps to the bus they went.  Together.  I am so glad she was there.  A I think she was glad he was there too.  I can’t wait to see him when he gets off the bus.  I want to leave now to go get him, but I have to wait.

It has been a long road getting Otto and his friends ready for preschool and now Kindergarden.  The girls came over today after dropping off the big kids and we had just 5 small kids, of whom Mette is the oldest, here for lemon meringue pie, snacks and champagne.  It’s a big deal all of this.

Leading up to today has been absolute madness here.  It always is this time of year.  School is also starting for eric and that always means chaos.  Adding Otto to the mix was one bit of craziness.  Then last friday we found out eric has two detached retinas and needs surgery.  SOON!  so that is scheduled for next wednesday.  Plus Rachel and I are hosting a HUGE garage sale this weekend which has meant a ton of cleaning and prep to get ready for it.  Uncle Racer is here saving the day and helping it all get done, but wow!!  I feel so far behind and out of it.  Oh yeah, we are also finally getting rid of the bats in the house which is a MAJOR undertaking, but I will post more on that.

AHHH

so here I am.  Hanging with Mette, wondering if we can leave to go get the boy yet.

Summer is almost over

Otto starts Kindergarden one week from tomorrow.  I am trying really hard not to think of it as the end of all fun.  Gone are our days of unstructured play and games day after day.  Once he steps on that bus life takes a new path.

No.  This is good for him.  He LOVES being around other kids and seems to thrive in structure.  The kid who wouldn’t stay with sitter long enough for me to pee by myself now asks when I will leave as soon as a sitter arrives.  Today he was at a camp from 9 until 2 and while I got a BIG hug when he saw me coming to pick him up, there were no tears and he said he had an amazing day and can’t wait to go back tomorrow.

He is ready.  Lunch box in hand, back pack on ready.

I am getting there.

Just when I think he can’t really be there, I look and see how tall he is now.  His shoes are BIG.  His pants, long.  I started asking him to put away his laundry and by gosh he can do it.  And will, because Lord knows I hate all things laudryish.  He enjoys helping out around the house, and actually can.  Not just little kid help to keep them occupied, but long listen to the job and then go off and do it kind of help.

I am attempting to squeeze the most amount of fun and total lack of schedule from the next week as possible.  And yes, I know that we will still have evenings, weekends, holidays and summers, but for the past 5.5 years I have pretty much spent ALL day, EVERY day with Otto.  I can count in single digits the amount of times I have been gone from him all day, and on one hand the times I have been away from him over night.  Now he will get on a bus at 8 in the morning and come home at 4!

But it’s totally cool. I got this.

it’s totally cool. I got this.

it’s totally cool. I got this.

it’s totally cool. I got this.

it’s totally cool. I got this.

Let the record state

Tonight I brought in what is surely our best grape harvest yet from the back yard. After picking, cleaning and juicing both bowls of grapes I picked I was left with five cups of fresh grape juice.

That happens to be exactly the amount needed to make a batch of my (world famous) grape jelly! I know what I am making tomorrow!

Yummy!

When things don’t work out as planned it is good to remember when they do.

Ballet Camp

You will be surprised to know that when given a list of camps to pick from for this summer, Mette chose Princess Ballet Camp. It starts today. Eric came home from work early (!) to take her to the first class. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!
